Getting DOS window on startup

Submitted by Anonymous on 18 May, 2008 - 09:49

Hi Archetwist

Many thanks again for all you are doing for us all.

With this newest 2.6b version I am geting a dos window on startup saying DNS cannot be resolved and stopping at listening port8123. Is this because I am off the internet ro a bug somehow. With Privoxy I also had this dos window saying about the same thing but I could close it easier with being presented the OK ready option n enter. With Polipo stop has to be with the cross. Could this be addressed so may be it works without that dos or other window appearing on startup or is it to with my connection internet being off.

Apart from that all my prayers are for you for this wonderful effort and gesture.

May I ask why is the ZipVersion4. included in this bundle. Sould I install it first for better functionality?

Couple of questions

With this newest 2.6b version I am geting a dos window on startup saying DNS cannot be resolved

If the message is DNS: couldn't open /etc/resolv.conf it's normal.

stopping at listening port8123

That's pretty strange because it should be listening on port 8118.

Could this be addressed so may be it works without that dos or other window appearing on startup or is it to with my connection internet being off.

Polipo and Tor windows should be hidden (they are on my machine). What version of Windows are you using? Are you, by any chance, executing OperaTor without extracting it first? Is your internet connection active?

Apart from that all my prayers are for you for this wonderful effort and gesture.

Thank you very much.

May I ask why is the ZipVersion4. included in this bundle.

What do you mean? Where did you find it?

Dos window at startup problem

Dear Archetwist

Thanks for answering.

I do get the text as you quote it. In fact I should have been more methodical and given you the exact wording; sorry about that.If its any use I will surely do it next time round but the wording you give seems to be about right, truer to what I also get. If you say it is normal then there is no problem. But I do still get the dos window with the internet connection on.

I do confirm getting ‘connection being established on listening port 8123’ but within the browser, settings are correct on 8118. Should I be worried on this anomaly?

I am on an XP Pro without SP2 update would that be causing the problem do you think?

Apart from that may I add your work is truely brilliant everything works as I am sure most of us would have wanted Opera to work.

I did extract the zip to Program Files before sending the folder shortcut to desktop and again making a shortcut right on my desktop of thre OperaTor icon which works perfectly.

Apologies for bothering you with this 4.2bzip in my OperaTor desktop folder, all my fault for inadvertently putting it there and then appearing with this silly query.

One final request I have never been able integrate the mail n chat in my Opera browser also its not being entirely free, would that be at all possible in future versions of OperaTor to integrate the mail as well as the chat. Then it would be more than perfect as of now I have to move to gmail and yahoo everytime.

Many thanks again for sparing us your time and being rather long.God bless.

Polipo

If you say it is normal then there is no problem.

It's beacuse of the Unix/Linux origins of Polipo.

I do confirm getting ‘connection being established on listening port 8123’ but within the browser, settings are correct on 8118. Should I be worried on this anomaly?

It appears that OperaTor fails to pass the right configuration file to Polipo. I think so because the default port for Polipo (in OperaTor) is 8118, the same port Opera uses for proxy servers (Polipo is, in fact, a local proxy). Can you take a couple of screenshots which would give me an idea on how you use OperaTor?

One final request I have never been able integrate the mail n chat in my Opera browser also its not being entirely free, would that be at all possible in future versions of OperaTor to integrate the mail as well as the chat. Then it would be more than perfect as of now I have to move to gmail and yahoo everytime.

OperaTor deletes mail and chat data on exit. In the next version it will be possible to disable this behavior. However, please keep in mind that due to the nature of Tor the only connection types which are anonymized are HTTP and HTTPS, so if you want to stay anonymous use OperaTor for webpage browsing only.

You've been warned! ;) It appears to me though that you don't use OperaTor for its main purpose – anonymous browsing. Am I right? If so, why did you choose OperaTor over the “standard” Opera?

Thanks for all your kind words. Best luck to you, too.

Dos window problem traced and OperaTor 3.0 test2

Dear Archetwist

Kindly forgive me for not getting back earlier.I actually wrote back a rather detailed answer to your questions but stupidly though inadvertently lost it before send; afterwards I was so disappointed I decided to let it lie for a while.Apologies again.

In fact I probably wrongly expressed myself I have always wanted to chat since it seemed(to me because of that chat accont in tools)integrated in the original Opera but always failed to try for one reason or another. Its only my interest in that TorChat thread in FAQ that prompted this silly request of mine.

In fact I am ever so grateful for this awesome OperaTor as prior to this I had been struggling for a long while with all sort of freeware proxies then Tor Jap etc all unsatisfactorily.

May I humbly request you keep this side of your work always free specially for people like us who cannot afford much with this ever worsening selfish world dominated by the haves and I am already old enough not to bother fighting any more at the moment. How I would love to be able to donate something like that other fellow user.Hope I may also be able to in the future too. Be great and non more than you deserve to be encouraged.

Sorry for being long I finally managed to trace the Dos window problem to a copy of Proxomitron which I forgot running in the background. Its awesome software just as yours and I always seem to try to keep it.I particularly like the user-agent filter where all your communications appear as localhost on sitecheck with Opera.Just its filters are difficult to master.Be nice if someone worked on an ideal set of filters. That author is also always in my prayers even though he died.

I tried your OperaTor version 3test2.Its truely awesome for speed etc but I have to test it again as I was having problems twice after install with the dinamic spacer dead. Have you had any feedback on this or is it just me?

PS That TorChat also did not work out for me must try download new zip.Thank you for you time again and your webdesigns are fascinatingly clear and beautiful.Congratulations.

OperaTor 3.0 test2 problem address box

Hi Archetwist

Its me again.Definitely cannot get any dynamic spacer under address box on this version.Switched back to 2.6b.

Also on install I always get as well as HTTP HTTPS the following also selected in Proxy Settings:FTP,WAIS,Gopher and enable HTTP 1.1. Should this be left selected or should I deselect the last 4 mentioned.

Thanks again for everything.

Definitely cannot get any

I can't replicate this.

Do not turn off HTTP 1.1. FTP, WAIS and Gopher are irrelevant. Polipo doesn't support them anyway.

Thank you for you time again and your webdesigns are fascinatingly clear and beautiful.

I'm glad someone noticed ;) . Thank you.
