I've figured out that the \profile\cache4\ directories that OperaTor is creating are not random. They appear in whatever directory pops up first in the “save as” dialog, probably as part of opera's instant download feature, where it starts downloading while you decide where to save the file. Also, if I choose another directory, other than the one that the download began in (and got the superfluous cache4 directory), then the download will stop with an error and I will need to restart it.
